In business and in life, all of us have something that motivates us to do certain things. Without motivation we wouldn’t be doing anything.
The most common thing that usually motivates us in business is money and/or the feeling of being successful.
We all know why we started our business, career or sales job. For some it was about getting to a better financial state, for some it was about feeling more accomplished, and others it was about the great feeling of building a brand new business from the ground up.
Whatever it is that motivates you, that is what makes you wake up in the morning and say ‘I’m gonna work hard today, and get a step closer to where I want to get!’ The more you want to achieve your goals, the harder you’ll work.
There is one thing that motivates people like no other motivation, it puts people on a rampage to achieve and accomplish, and that is: Revenge!
Someone told me yesterday the following personal story:
I got engaged in my early 20’s; I was just out of Yeshiva (A Jewish educational institution that focuses on the study of traditional religious texts, primarily the Talmud and Torah study.). My fiancée had a great job in a very well-known company.
Right after getting married I got a phone call from my wife’s boss; he wanted to talk to me and asked me to come right over. As soon as I walked into his office, he pushed me in to a very small dark closet, sat me down on a chair, and with his hand in my face he told me the following: “Listen up young Yeshiva man, I don’t like you, you are a nobody. But just to make your wife happy I’ll give a job at the company”.
I’m sitting there thinking to myself ‘he doesn’t even know me enough to hate me’. I was very angry and humiliated; I literally wanted to punch him in his face. But I did something much worse than that. I accepted the job!
I started doing sales for the company, selling their products to very large entertainment companies. I was just out of Yeshiva with no training or knowledge in business, but I had an agenda….
After a year being with the company, I made it to the top salesman of the year, out of 20 other trained and experienced salesmen.
At the company’s annual event I was honored with the title: Top Salesman of the Year. I got up at the podium and said: “I’m very humbled with this honor, but I’m sorry to inform that I am resigning as of today…”
My boss ran over to me and yelled “what are you doing???” I said:
“You don’t want a Yeshiva guy working for you!!!”
And walked out.
REVENGE! This is the only thing that could motivate a young Yeshiva guy, with no business knowledge and education, to make it to the top of the company in ONE year, amongst many trained and experienced salesmen.
So many times when you have a great (but risky) idea in business, people will turn you down and tell you that you’ll never make it. Those people were key to my success in business. I was on a mission to prove each and every one of them wrong, and show them that I can do it!!
So whether you’re taking revenge or not; Sell for REVENGE!!!
